about

“Twit-twoo.” I used to lie in bed listening to that soft sound coming from the darkness. It comforted me like sunlight.

Strange that they are a symbol of death to some. Perhaps it is because they are master assassins.

Let’s unearth the truth. Get ready. You’re about to be as wise as a bazaar.

They glide silently in the night hunting tiny creatures. They can’t move their tubular eyes, but they can rotate their heads 270 degrees in each direction.

Those that live in barns hiss when threatened. Others screech, whistle, rattle and growl. It makes you want to question everything you know.

In a moment, close your eyes. Picture this creature. What does it look like? How does it move?

Hold that thought. If you’re thinking, I want one as a companion, you’re out of luck. They are impossible to train. I know that because I looked it up. There’s this website called Bird Eden and it says:

“They are difficult to train and need a considerable amount of patience and understanding from the caretaker.”

The reality is this: pigeons are smarter.

Listen carefully. They are too soft for human touch … stroking one deadly. You’re much better off living in Antarctica - the only continent in the world they don’t inhabit.

Let’s take a look at what we’ve learnt. The sky is fire. You’re driving home from work. There’s a flash of white and then you see it clearly. Your breath catches, it is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen. And then it’s gone.

You feel this overwhelming sense of wonder.

It’s okay. You can relax, take a deep breath, go for a walk at twilight. Be still as a stone and take it all in. Make sure you wrap up warm, it’s cold outside. Put your hat on. Stay safe.

This is what you should do next.

Watch them walk with their long legs. Like a villain in an old cartoon who’s always up to something. This demonstrates how unpredictable they are ... always taking you by surprise.

What else is out there? Secret worlds under glistening starlight. Where everything is as it should be, moving like clockwork. Tick tock. “Twit-twoo,” answers the owl.
